A SUMMER ELOPEMENT AT CWM IDWAL IN SNOWDONIA: WARM LIGHT AND OPEN VIEWS
Some elopements arrive with a story already written, and Dean and Tori's is one I'm happy to retell. They eloped to North Wales in the summer of 2023 and chose Cwm Idwal for their ceremony, amongst the rolling hills of one of Eryri's most dramatic valleys. It was a stunner of a day, and it shows why summer in the mountains is so hard to beat.
A Warm Day in the Cwm
It was a lovely warm day, and that changes how everything feels. Nobody's shivering through their vows, the dress moves lightly in the breeze and you can sit on the grass by the water without a second thought. Dean and Tori chose the signature elopements package, which brings together a personalised ceremony and half-day photography coverage.
You can see more of their day on their portfolio page, and I still love what they told me: "We couldn't be happier with the way it went."
What Warm Light Does for Your Photographs
When the sun's out, the whole landscape gets warmer. Grass turns gold, rock picks up soft shadows and skin glows. The sky matters just as much as the sun. Davinia and Joao's elopement was another lovely warm day, where soft, fluffy clouds complemented the photos with the golden glow of the sun. Clouds like that act as a gentle backdrop and stop the sky looking flat.
That's one reason I'm never unhappy to see a few clouds on a summer day. A cloudless blue sky looks lovely in real life, but a sky with some shape to it makes for pictures with more depth. It's also a reminder that you can't order the weather. You can only choose a date, trust the day and enjoy whatever it brings.
A Valley Made for Open Views
Cwm Idwal is a glacial valley, and its open, bowl-like shape gives you big views in every direction. The Eryri National Park Authority has a page on the walk if you'd like to know what it's like on foot. For a ceremony it means no cramped corners: you can stand together by the lake, find a rock to sit on and look out at a wide skyline.
Dean and Tori's pictures play with that space. You'll see them small against the mountains in some frames and close together in others, which is what I love about an elopement here: it lets us do both.
Choosing Your Time of Day
The time you choose changes the feel of the pictures. Morning light is soft and cool, and valleys tend to be quieter before the day's walkers arrive. Late afternoon and evening bring a warmer glow, which is lovely if you'd like the golden look. There isn't a right answer, so I'd ask what suits the two of you, how you'd like the day to start and whether you'd prefer to be married before lunch or as the day winds down. We can build the plan around that, and I'm happy to talk it through with you before you pick a date.
Planning a Mountain Ceremony in Summer
Summer is kind, but mountains are still mountains. I'd keep a few things in mind:
Footwear: paths are uneven, so bring shoes you can walk in, even if they're not the ones you're wearing in the photos. The national park authority's safety advice recommends suitable hiking boots with a thick sole and high sides.
Layers: it's usually cooler up in the hills than in the car park, so bring something warm.
The forecast: check the Met Office mountain forecast a day or two ahead, and we'll keep a plan B ready just in case.
Water and sun protection: sunshine in the mountains still catches you out, so bring a bottle and some sun cream.
If you'd like to see how the day fits together from start to finish, my guide to how to elope to North Wales is a good next read.
It Doesn't Have to Be Cwm Idwal
I love this valley, but I'd never want it to become the only choice. Your elopement can happen anywhere that means something to you: a quiet corner of another part of Wales, somewhere across the UK or a spot you've dreamed about abroad. Tell me the place, and we'll work out whether and how it could work. If you're not sure where to start, my packages page shows what each option includes, and the best time of year to elope has its own guide.
Warm light is waiting for you somewhere, whichever lake or mountain you pick.
