What to wear to elope is one of the first practical questions couples ask — especially in North Wales, where a morning can start in soft sun and finish in hill mist. You want to feel like yourselves, move safely on paths, and still love the photographs years later.
I'm Leon, celebrant and photographer. Here is the advice I give before mountain and coastal elopement days.
Dress for the Ground Under Your Feet
Mountain paths, lakeshores and coastal turf are rarely ballroom floors. Choose shoes you can walk in for real: boots with grip, block heels you have practised in, or clean trainers that suit your style. Long trains need a bustle plan or a length you can lift. Flowing fabric looks beautiful in wind; it also wraps around legs on exposed ridges — test it.
Layers beat a single heavy coat. A warm layer you can remove for vows and put back for the walk keeps you comfortable without changing the whole look.
Colours and Welsh Light
Soft overcast light is a photographer's friend. Deep reds, forest greens, cream, soft gold and classic black/white all hold up in North Wales weather. Neon and heavy glitter can fight the landscape. If you love colour, lean into rich tones rather than harsh ones.
Coastal wind is cooler than a forecast app suggests. A tailored jacket or wrap that matches the outfit photographs better than a random borrowed coat.
Weather Is Part of the Wardrobe
Clear umbrellas, spare socks and a bag for muddy hems are unromantic until the minute you need them. I have photographed ceremonies through rain and broken cloud; the couples who looked most at ease had planned for both. More on that in eloping in North Wales whatever the weather.
Comfort Shows in the Photographs
When you can walk, sit on a rock and wrap your arms around each other without fussing at a seam, the pictures relax. That matters more than matching a Pinterest board. For the shape of the day see the first meet and the packages page.
Wear what lets you say your vows without thinking about your feet. North Wales will bring the landscape; you bring the ease. When you want to talk locations and timing, use how to elope to North Wales or book a luxury elopement.
