THE BEST ELOPEMENT SPOTS IN SNOWDONIA

Whether you're exchanging vows on a windswept mountaintop or stealing kisses near a calm, glass-like lake, Snowdonia (Eryri) has a spot for every love story. I'm based in Llandudno, and these mountains are where I've officiated and photographed some of my favourite elopements. So I wanted to share the places I keep coming back to, along with the practical bits: how you get there, where to park and what to think about before you say "I do".

1. Cwm Idwal

If you want drama, this is it. Cwm Idwal is a huge, ice-sculpted bowl in the mountains, with the crystal-clear waters of Llyn Idwal at its heart and sheer cliffs rising behind. It's the oldest National Nature Reserve in Wales, and honestly, the backdrop does half the work for me!

Dean and Tori eloped here in the summer of 2023, amongst the rolling hills of Cwm Idwal, with a personalised ceremony and half-day photography. You can see their day in Dean and Tori's story.

Getting there: start at the Cwm Idwal Visitor Centre beside the A5 at Llyn Ogwen (Nant Ffrancon, Bethesda, LL57 3LZ). The car park there is run by Eryri National Park, and there are toilets and a refreshments kiosk at the visitor centre. The T10 bus between Bangor and Corwen also stops at Ogwen.

The walk: it's roughly a kilometre from the visitor centre up to the lake on a stone path, with some steep, rough sections. The full circuit of the lake is about 3 miles and is described by the National Trust as moderately strenuous. Good footwear is a must, and I'll always help you plan what to wear and what to bring so you can change into your outfit comfortably.

Good to know: it's a protected nature reserve, so we tread lightly. Cattle sometimes graze on the way up, and the National Trust asks visitors not to swim in Llyn Idwal to protect its delicate ecosystem.

2. The lonely tree at Llyn Padarn, Llanberis

There's something so romantic about a single tree standing in the water, with mountains reflected all around. The lonely tree on Llyn Padarn is one of the most photographed spots in Snowdonia, and for good reason.

Penny and James chose it for their autumn elopement in 2025. We walked slowly down to the tree while I captured all the magic on camera, then set up next to it for their ceremony. The clouds acted as a natural diffuser for soft light, which is a photographer's dream! Read Penny and James's story.

Getting there: the closest parking is Padarn Country Park car park (LL55 4EL), opposite the watersports centre on the lakeside. From there the tree is only a short, fairly flat walk. That makes it a lovely choice if you'd like something stunning without a big hike, or if family are joining you.

Good to know: it's popular with photographers, especially at sunrise and sunset, so timing matters. I'll help you pick a time that gives you the most privacy.

3. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)

For the adventurers, why not say your vows near the top of Wales's highest mountain? Picture standing above the clouds with the whole of Eryri laid out beneath you. It's unforgettable.

Getting there: you can walk one of the well-known paths, or take the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis. The railway runs seasonally, and in 2026 the summit service runs from May to late October, weather permitting. A summit return includes a stopover of only around 30 minutes, and you have to come back on the same train, so it suits a short and sweet ceremony. High winds can stop trains reaching the summit, so we'd always have a plan B lower down.

Good to know: mountain weather changes fast, even in summer. Warm layers and waterproofs are part of the outfit plan!

4. Snowdonia's woodlands

Not every elopement needs a summit. Kayla and Nathan travelled all the way from Australia and had their ceremony officiated in a stunning woodland on an overcast spring day in 2024. Woodlands give you shelter, soft green light and a real sense of privacy. They're perfect if you'd like something intimate, or if the forecast is a bit wild. See Kayla and Nathan's elopement.

5. Wherever your story leads

A green valley and rugged mountainside in Snowdonia under breaking cloud

Snowdonia is full of quiet lakes, valleys and viewpoints, and part of my job is location scouting with you. Davinia and Joao were married amongst the mountains of Snowdonia in September 2024. We had a mix of rain, dreamy clouds and sunshine, and I used every bit of it for iconic photos. That's the thing about the mountains: changeable weather often makes the most beautiful images.

With my Ultimate Elopement you can choose multiple locations instead of one, and I chauffeur you between them, so you could start at a lake and finish somewhere completely different. Have a look at my elopement packages to see what's included.

A few things to plan for

  • Permission: some of Snowdonia's best spots are cared for by the National Trust, Eryri National Park or Natural Resources Wales. The National Trust handles wedding photography requests at property level and asks you to arrange it in advance. Eryri National Park asks commercial filming and photography to have the landowner's permission, and some protected sites need extra consent. I check this for every location we choose, so you don't have to.

  • Drones: I love adding drone coverage, but the National Trust doesn't allow unauthorised drones on its land, so we only fly where it's allowed.

  • The legal bit: a ceremony on a mountain or lakeshore isn't legally binding on its own in Wales (yet), so most couples also have a short register office ceremony. I explain it all in Is eloping legal in Wales?

  • Leave no trace: no confetti or anything left behind. We leave these places just as beautiful as we found them.

If you'd like to see how the whole day flows, from the first meet to your ceremony and post-ceremony photos, have a read of my Deluxe Elopement Guide.

Prefer the coast? Anglesey and Llandudno have some of the best sunsets in North Wales. Have a look at the sunset locations at Twilight Ceremonies for the Great Orme, South Stack and Penmon lighthouses.
