ELOPING JUST THE TWO OF YOU: HOW AN ELOPEMENT FOR TWO WORKS IN WALES
Some couples want a hundred guests. Others want nobody at all except each other. If you're picturing an elopement for two in Wales, you're not being awkward. You're describing a day that can work beautifully, as long as you understand which parts are legal and which parts are celebrant-led.
I'm Leon, an accredited celebrant and professional photographer. Here's how eloping just the two of you actually works.
Two Different Parts of the Day
In England and Wales, a legal marriage or civil partnership is completed with a registrar (or an authorised person) and the required formalities. That legal signing needs two witnesses. The "just the two of you" feeling belongs to the celebrant ceremony: vows, readings, rings and photographs in a place you've chosen, without a crowd.
So you can have a private ceremony on a hillside with only yourselves and me, and still complete the legal part separately at a register office with two witnesses. My post on is eloping legal in Wales covers the legal route without me repeating it all here. Always check GOV.UK and your local council register office for current notice periods and rules.
What a Day for Two Feels Like
When it's only the two of you, the day softens. There's no microphone, no receiving line and no timetable built around other people's trains. We meet, we settle into the place, and the ceremony unfolds at a human pace.
I write your ceremony script from scratch. You can co-create it with me or keep it secret until the day. Your vows are yours. Without an audience, they often come out more like a conversation than a performance, which is exactly the point.
Photographs Without an Audience
Photography for two is intimate by nature. There's nobody stepping into frame, and nowhere to hide if you're camera shy — which is why I work in a candid way and give you time to forget I'm there. Polaroids develop in your hands before the day is over. Digital photos take four weeks; videos take eight.
Where You Can Go
North Wales is full of places that suit two people better than two hundred: lakeshores, woodland clearings, quiet stretches of coast, and spots that only mean something to you. You can also choose elsewhere in the UK or abroad if that's where your story is. The "just us" feeling travels.
If you want the wider planning picture, start with how to elope to North Wales and the first meet.
