ELOPING TO NORTH WALES FROM ABROAD: A PLANNING GUIDE
Some of the couples I've married have travelled a very long way to be here. Kayla and Nathan came all the way from Australia for their spring 2024 elopement, and Davinia and Joao had their family present from Spain for their ceremony amongst the mountains of Snowdonia. Travelling to North Wales to elope is completely possible, and it's one of my favourite things to help with.
It does take a little more planning, though. Here's how I approach elopements for couples coming from overseas, from the legal side to the practical details of getting here.
First, Decide What "Married" Means for You
My elopement ceremonies are celebrant-led. They're deeply personal, written from scratch around your love story, and they can happen on a mountainside or beside a lake. In England and Wales, though, a celebrant-led ceremony on its own isn't legally binding. I explain this in detail in is eloping legal in Wales?
For couples from abroad, that leaves two broad options. You can complete the legal marriage here in Wales as well, or you can make it legal wherever suits you best and come to North Wales for the ceremony that tells your story. Both are completely valid. The ceremony you have with me is the one you'll remember, whichever route you choose for the paperwork.
If You'd Like to Marry Legally in Wales
If the legal part is happening here too, there are a few official rules to plan around. According to GOV.UK guidance on giving notice:
You must give notice at a register office at least 29 days before your ceremony, and the ceremony must happen within 12 months. You must have lived in that registration district for the past 7 days. And if one of you is from outside the UK, you must give notice together, unless you both have British or Irish citizenship or settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
In practice, that means the legal route can involve a longer stay in the UK than the elopement itself. It's worth working out your dates early.
Visas: Check Before You Book Flights
GOV.UK explains that you must apply for a Marriage Visitor visa if you want to give notice or get married in the UK and you're not planning to stay or settle here afterwards, and you meet the other eligibility rules. It also lists exceptions, such as Irish citizens and people with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
With that visa, you can marry within 6 months of arrival, at a venue licensed for this purpose. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel, a decision usually comes within 3 weeks, and it costs £135 to apply. Rules depend on your nationality and circumstances, so always check the official guidance for yourselves. I'm a celebrant and photographer, not an immigration adviser, but I'm very happy to help you line up your elopement date once you know your legal plan.
Planning From the Other Side of the World
Distance doesn't make the planning harder with me, it just moves it online. We can start with a relaxed video call, talk through your love story and the places you're drawn to, and build everything from there. Your ceremony script is written over the months beforehand, either co-created with me or kept secret until the day.
I'm based in Llandudno and know these mountains and beaches well, so I can talk you through each location, from access to parking. That's especially helpful when you've only ever seen these places in photos.
Give Yourselves a Day or Two
When you're flying in, I always suggest arriving a day or two before the elopement to land, rest and get over any jet lag. Long haul travel and wedding nerves are not a great mix, and a little time in hand means you can explore, pick up anything you've forgotten and enjoy a quiet evening before the big day.
It also gives you a buffer if flights are delayed. A spare day takes a lot of worry away, and it means your elopement day starts with excitement rather than exhaustion.
Bringing Family With You
Eloping doesn't have to mean leaving everyone behind. Davinia and Joao's family travelled from Spain to be part of their day, and having them there made it feel even more special. Their Signature package included first meet photos, transport, and pictures after the ceremony, and they stayed in a cottage near their location.
If family are joining you, it helps to think about their travel and accommodation as early as your own, especially in the busy summer months. And if some of your loved ones can't make the trip, your photos go into your Love Story Album, online and printed, so the people back home can see every chapter. Photos are delivered in 4 weeks and videos in 8 weeks.
Getting Around Once You're Here
North Wales is beautiful, but the best spots aren't always easy to reach without local knowledge. On both my packages, private chauffeuring is provided personally by me, so you won't need to worry about hiring a car or navigating mountain roads on your wedding day. You can sit back, play your favourite music, and arrive at each location relaxed.
Before You Book
If you're dreaming of eloping here from abroad, take a look at the real couples in my portfolio for a feel of what's possible, and read my story to see who'll be standing beside you. When your dates start to take shape, my enquiry page is where it begins. Your album then follows you home through Leon Bagnall Experiences, so the story you write in these mountains travels back with you, however many miles that turns out to be.
