A FULL CIRCLE AUTUMN ELOPEMENT BY THE LONELY TREE IN LLANBERIS

Some elopements feel like they were always meant to happen in a certain place. Penny and James's autumn 2025 elopement in Llanberis was one of them. A glass-like lake, a lone tree standing in the water, soft cloud overhead and a ceremony script that was autumn themed right down to their certification.

I've called it a full circle elopement ever since. Here's how the day unfolded, and why autumn in Llanberis is so special.

The Drive Into the Mountains

Our day started in the car. On both my packages, private chauffeuring is provided personally by me, and I love this part of the day more than couples might expect. On the way to the mountains, Penny and James played their favourite music on the car's speakers, and after an hour we arrived, full of excitement and happiness.

That hour matters. It's time for nerves to settle and for the day to start feeling real. By the time we parked up, the mood was relaxed, giddy and completely theirs. It also gives me time to get to know a couple a little better before the camera comes out, and that always shows in the photos.

A Photographer's Dream of a Sky

The weather was amazing: a bit of blue sky and plenty of cloud. Some couples hope for wall to wall sunshine, but for me this is the dream. The clouds act as a diffuser for soft lighting, so skin looks natural, colours stay rich and nobody spends the afternoon squinting.

In autumn, that soft light does something lovely to the landscape too. The bracken and the trees turn copper and gold, and the still water picks up every colour. It's one of the reasons I always encourage couples to consider autumn for an elopement in Llanberis.

Walking Down to the Lonely Tree

We began by slowly walking down to the lonely tree while I captured all the magic on camera. Lots of natural photos and a few poses too. This is my favourite way to start any elopement shoot. There's no rush to the first pose, just two people walking together through the place they've chosen to marry, and me quietly catching it.

I mentioned the lonely tree in my post on the best elopement spots in Snowdonia, and seeing it on a calm autumn day is something else. The reflection, the stillness and the mountains behind make it feel like the whole valley has gone quiet just for you.

The Ceremony Beside the Lake

We set up next to the lonely tree and began their ceremony. I opened with an opening speech, then Penny shared her first reading and her commitments to James, and James did the same for her. Both rings were exchanged while they repeated their personalised words after me. I closed the ceremony with a closing speech before their first kiss sealed their wedding and made them Mr and Mrs.

Everything was recorded and photographed, and because I'm both celebrant and photographer, the moments flowed from one to the next without anyone stepping in or out. Not one ceremony script is the same, and theirs was crafted from scratch around their story, autumn theme and all.

The Details That Made It Theirs

An autumn themed ceremony doesn't have to mean pumpkins and fairy lights. For Penny and James, it was woven into the words, the feel of the day and even their certification. Those are the touches that make a ceremony feel like it belongs to one couple and no one else. When the gift bag comes home with you, with the script and certification sealed in its presentation box, the theme comes with it.

Penny and James put it simply afterwards: "Leon is incredible at what he does, and has given us such a memorable day and photographs that reflect that." You can see more of their day in their portfolio story.

Autumn in Eryri: A Few Practical Things

Autumn days are shorter, so I plan an autumn elopement around the light. The afternoon turns golden earlier than in summer, which suits a relaxed day nicely: a calm morning getting ready, the drive into the mountains and a ceremony while the light is at its softest.

It's also worth bringing a warm layer and a pair of boots for the walk to your ceremony spot. Lakeshores can be soggy after autumn rain, and you'll enjoy the walk down far more with dry feet, even if you swap into your wedding shoes when we arrive.

Planning Your Own Day in Llanberis

Llanberis sits at the foot of the mountains, and there's plenty of parking around Llyn Padarn. Parc Padarn lists three car parks, at Gilfach Ddu, Dolbadarn and Y Glyn, with payment by machine or PayByPhone. I take care of the logistics and the driving, so all you need to think about is where you'd love to stand when you say "I do".

If you'd like to see how an elopement like this comes together, my page on luxury elopements in North Wales explains the experience, and the enquiry page is open whenever your own date feels close.

Why I Call It Full Circle

Penny and James's story didn't end beside the lake. Elope with Leon couples carry on into Twilight Ceremonies, where they can celebrate their marriage under a summer sunset, and their photos go into the same Love Story Album that started on their elopement day. You can read their love story on Twilight Ceremonies too. One lonely tree, one autumn afternoon, and a story with plenty of chapters still to come.
